Empowering Women Across India’s Coffee Value Chain
The Women’s Coffee Association – India (WCAI) is a pioneering force dedicated to empowering women across India’s coffee value chain. Established in 2012 and headquartered in Bengaluru, WCAI is the India chapter of the globally recognized International Women’s Coffee Association (IWCA). As a not-for-profit organisation, WCAI works with a mission to support women coffee plantation workers and their families while promoting the role of Indian women in the entire coffee ecosystem. Led by Sunalini Menon, Immediate Past President; Ms. Arathy Somaiah, President; Poornima Jayaraj, Secretary; and Omana Chethan, Treasurer, WCAI is committed to driving impactful initiatives and empowering women throughout India’s coffee value chain.
Grassroots Initiatives Creating Real Impact
WCAI’s initiatives are designed to create meaningful change at the grassroots level.
- Nayan Tara supports the education of girls, many of whom are the first in their families to attend school or college.
- Aa Haar addresses nutrition needs by providing essential food items to labour families.
- Su Prana focuses on healthcare by organizing health camps and providing follow-up support for women.
- Kou Shalya fosters skill development in language and communication.
- Sam Raksha extends support to elder care homes in coffee-growing regions.
Advancing Women’s Careers in Coffee
In addition to these social initiatives, WCAI plays a key role in advancing the professional development of women in the coffee industry. Events like the Women Stars Brewing Championship and the Brewer Skills Championship offer women opportunities to showcase their talents, gain exposure, and grow in their coffee careers.

Coffee Santhe: Brewing Community and Collaboration
One of WCAI’s signature events is the annual Coffee Santhe, a vibrant coffee festival that brings together coffee producers, roasters, traders, and enthusiasts from across the country. Coffee Santhe serves as a vital fundraising platform to support WCAI’s projects, while also fostering conversations on sustainability, collaboration, and innovation within the coffee community. Featuring competitions, workshops, discussions, and a variety of stalls, the event celebrates India’s rich coffee culture and promotes a more transparent, inclusive, and resilient coffee ecosystem.
Partnering for a Sustainable Future
As a registered organization under DARPAN with 12A and 80G exemptions, WCAI actively collaborates with businesses, institutions, and individuals who share its vision. It provides opportunities for CSR partnerships, sponsorships, and direct contributions to support its impactful projects.
Brewing a More Inclusive Coffee Future
By bringing together women, communities, and stakeholders, WCAI is building a stronger and more equitable future for the Indian coffee industry.
